How to Get Visibility into the 5G Core

Send 5G core data from virtual taps to probes

Getting visibility into the 5G core network requires a fabric that can access data through various virtual tapping (vTap) solutions from network equipment manufacturers (NEM), third parties, and network function providers (NFP). The visibility fabric must be able to terminate, process, and forward 5G core data packets in different encapsulated formats from the virtual taps to the monitoring probes.

Automation helps remove the complexity of the network layer communication between the taps and the probes. It requires a visibility fabric that can capture traffic from multiple sources in a coordinated and synchronized manner. The resulting data provides insight into the 5G core in multivendor deployments, enabling duplicate packets to be recognized and processed. Also needed is the ability to replicate traffic to feed multiple probe environments and a visibility fabric that can upgrade to new probes without changing the underlying architecture or transport layer.

Gaining visibility into the 5G core requires access to the 5G core data from vTaps and the ability to prepare traffic for monitoring probes. The Keysight MobileStack on Vision X solution is a high-performance visibility platform optimized for 5G. It enables hundreds of millions of subscriber sessions and nearly 2,000 gigs of user plane traffic per chassis, to be correlated. The solution supports 5G filtering, control plane and user plane separation (CUPS), 5G slice awareness and subscriber-aware metadata.
