The TC277 (HMMC-5642) broadband lossy balun converts single-ended input signal into a pair of differential outputs. It has flat broadband differential response, broadband input matching and good output balance at high frequencies. The device is fabricated in HFTC’s HB2B process.

Applications

 

The HMMC-5642 broadband lossy balun is designed to be used as a low-cost single-ended to differential converter at the inputs of high-gain, internally matched, differential, limiting amplifiers driven to saturation from a single-ended source. It is particularly useful when the amplifier is used as a differential LO source for balanced mixers. In this application HMMC-5642 improves the output balance of the amplifier resulting in higher conversion efficiency, lower noise and improved isolations.

 

Device Architecture

 

The schematic of the HMMC-5642 balun is shown in Figure 1. The series RC sections after the 50 Ω transmission line improve input matching and balance at high frequencies. The inverting output OUTN of the balun is DC terminated with 50 Ω resistor and can be biased/monitored through 475 Ω resistor connected to VB. The output common mode rejection changes from zero at low frequencies to above 20 dB at 50 GHz and above.

 

Assembly Techniques
