NCAP scenarios testing must cover several test cases for common radar-based advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) and autonomous vehicle (AV) features and functions. To reproduce the scenes precisely, automotive manufacturers require a solution to render full 3D scenes in the lab with the goal of testing the real sensor response. Forward collision warning and autonomous emergency braking systems use cameras, lidar, or radar sensors individually or in concert (sensor fusion). However, each sensor offers a varying degree of performance.
Emulating real-world driving scenarios in the lab requires a full-scene emulator that can be used to test the radar sensors with varying driving speed, direction, distance, and number of targets across a contiguous field of view (FOV). Radar sensors must also be tested against variable environmental conditions, such as RF-dense urban scenes with interference, and surrounding landscape, to ensure confidence in their performance.
